I have no doubt the information and tools I took away from the training session will prove invaluable to me and my career.”

Jonathan Gilfillan

“Not long into the passive house tradies course , I experienced an awakening regarding construction methods.
The course was informative and enjoyable, our class gelled really well and everyone was attending for all the right reasons. Daniel is interactive, extremely knowledgeable, good-humored and particularly passionate about the topic. I would recommend this course to fellow tradespersons.”

The certified Passive House Tradesperson Course and Exam

After a welcoming introduction where you will be asked if it is okay to challenge you and take you out of your comfort zone, you learn how your focus is impacting your learning ability.

Following, you will learn the basics of Passive House design explained in an understandable way. Then you will be introduced to the Passive House concept and how it is all related to health and sustainability. After, you will start to discover the fundamentals.
Finally, we finish with homework preparation.

After a warmup session where you will find out what we all miss in our everyday life, you continue learning the basics. By now, you basically have everything covered. Now you learn the different parts in more detail. You will learn about the opaque building envelope and how to calculate the thermal performance of walls, roofs and floors. You learn about the different elements of the building envelope and how to avoid mould, moisture and thermal problems. Following, you will find out about blower-door testing and what can go wrong with these tests.

Finally, we finish with homework preparation.

Today you will discover Daniel’s Magic Formula, and you will find out that there is one formula that masters it all. After the first homework review, you learn about thermal imaging and that colourful images can lie. Following, you will learn about the most important part of the building envelope. the windows, and how to calculate the performance of windows.

Finally, we finish with homework preparation and exercises.

After the homework review, we will be focusing on ventilation and learn to design, size and to commission heat recovery ventilation systems. You learn the difference between HRV and ERV and what systems are available. By now, you have covered the 5 Passive House components in detail – which are thermal insulation, thermal bridge free design, Passive House windows, airtightness, and heat recovery ventilation.

Finally, we finish with homework preparation and exercises.

First, you learn about the design task of the exam and find out how to calculate the energy balance of buildings. After the homework review, learn about the heating, cooling and domestic hot water. You will learn why even in ‘hot’ climates like Sydney, we still design for the cold season, and you learn that domestic hot water is the biggest energy consumer in a Passive House. Following, you learn the strong limitation of ventilation systems to provide cooling.

Finally, we finish with homework preparation and exercises.

Like every other day, the economics day starts with a small coaching section and homework review. This eye-opening day shows why Passive House is economical and how the Passive House Tool can be used to make an economical decision on any building project. After this day, you will be able to say after what time the investment is profitable.

Finally, we finish with homework preparation and exercises.

This is an additional training session that Smart Plus Academy offers before the exam, and we put some extra weights on. But after this, the exam will be a breath.

First, we will read the full exam and do the priming. Now, you have 2.15 hours to show what you’ve learned in this week. The official part finishes before 1 pm but you may want to stick around. During these five amazing and intense days, you made new friends and you became a part of the Passive House family. Keep the evening and maybe even the night free for the celebration. You can be proud of yourself for what you have achieved; it deserves a party!

Monday after the exam, we will be in the pro clima training centre and learn how to install airtightness, weather tightness and windows. This additional full day is something that all students requested, and Smart Plus Academy decided to add it to the course. This day is AFTER the exam and not needed for certification but it is highly recommended to do.

Need to know

You may think that your work has no impact, and you don’t see yourself as part of the solution. You actually can be part of the solution.

Buildings are responsible for 28% of the CO2 emissions that are causing Climate Change, and we spend over 90% of our time indoors, which could have a huge impact on our health. But it does not need to be that way.

Climate Change causes things like bushfires, droughts and storms. Poorly created indoor environments cause asthma, sick building syndrome and lung diseases. With Smart Plus Academy courses, you will learn how to design and construct healthy and sustainable buildings that are economical, so that your clients will breathe freely and generations to come can live healthily and enjoy the beauty of our planet as we know it.

Yes, if you are a builder or tradesperson these courses are for YOU. Smart Plus Academy especially focuses on professionals in the building industry because they professionally build the world we live in. Only they can change the construction industry to a sustainable climate-friendly industry.

If you are an owner builder or a person with an interest in a sustainable future and healthy living, these courses could also be for you.

In our screening process, we will find out if we are a good match.

Are you an achiever who is willing to do the work?

Are you willing to play all out and move out of your comfort zone?

Will you be respectful to your classmates and teacher?

If you can answer all these questions with a ‘yes’, please fill in the application.

Passive House is the ideal tool to design and construct healthy and sustainable buildings that are economical, with far more flexibility then passive solar design. Passive House leaves no room for guesswork: a basic 3D model plug-in and software based on Excel calculate your actual performance.

Passive House is suitable for any budget from social housing to big mentions. Bigger projects achieve Passive House easily, which makes it ideal for office buildings, apartment blocks, schools or libraries.

The average Passive House costs about 8% more, but with a smart and intelligent design, it could even cost the same. Though it is an investment up front, you’ll end up saving a considerable amount of money on heating and cooling once you make the switch from your conventional house to your Passive House.

In 1990, Dr Wolfgang Feist built the first Passive House or Passivhaus in Darmstadt, Kranichstein, Germany. Shortly after, the Passive House Institute (PHI), an independent research institute, was founded. Since then, Passive House has been growing quickly around the world. In 2011, the Australian Passive House Association (APHA) was founded. Today, Passive House is thriving, and the Passive House Standard is integrated into the Green Star Rating by the Green Building Council Australia (GPCA) and highly suitable for ‘The Living Building Challenge’.

Europe is going passive, and by 2021 all European Union Members will have nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) – in other words, the Passive House approach in building codes.

Our wish for you is that these online courses will only be the start of your Passive House journey and that you will also become a certified Passive House Designer or Certified Passive House Tradesperson.
