The certified Passive House Designer Course and Exam

After a welcoming introduction where you will be asked if it is okay to challenge you and take you out of your comfort zone, you learn how your focus is impacting your learning ability.

Following, you will learn the basics of Passive House design explained in an understandable way. Then you will be introduced to the Passive House concept and how it is all related to health and sustainability. After, you will start to discover the fundamentals.
Finally, we finish with homework preparation.

After a warmup session where you will find out what we all miss in our everyday life, you continue learning the basics. By now, you basically have everything covered. Now you learn the different parts in more detail. You will learn about the opaque building envelope and how to calculate the thermal performance of walls, roofs and floors. You learn about the different elements of the building envelope and how to avoid mould, moisture and thermal problems. Following, you will find out about blower-door testing and what can go wrong with these tests.

Finally, we finish with homework preparation.

Today you will discover Daniel’s Magic Formula, and you will find out that there is one formula that masters it all. After the first homework review, you learn about thermal imaging and that colourful images can lie. Following, you will learn about the most important part of the building envelope. the windows, and how to calculate the performance of windows.

Finally, we finish with homework preparation and exercises.

After the homework review, we will be focusing on ventilation and learn to design, size and to commission heat recovery ventilation systems. You learn the difference between HRV and ERV and what systems are available. By now, you have covered the 5 Passive House components in detail – which are thermal insulation, thermal bridge free design, Passive House windows, airtightness, and heat recovery ventilation.

Finally, we finish with homework preparation and exercises.

First, you learn about the design task of the exam and find out how to calculate the energy balance of buildings. After the homework review, learn about the heating, cooling and domestic hot water. You will learn why even in ‘hot’ climates like Sydney, we still design for the cold season, and you learn that domestic hot water is the biggest energy consumer in a Passive House. Following, you learn the strong limitation of ventilation systems to provide cooling.

Finally, we finish with homework preparation and exercises.

Like every other day, the economics day starts with a small coaching section and homework review. This eye-opening day shows why Passive House is economical and how the Passive House Tool can be used to make an economical decision on any building project. After this day, you will be able to say after what time the investment is profitable.

After seeing the bigger picture and some hope, we will review our homework. What should we do with the building stock? Can we apply Passive House to existing buildings and is it economical? These important questions will be answered. But numbers don’t lie, and there is no one size fits all. After finishing the theory, you learn about the ‘why’ behind Passive House.

Finally, no more homework.

This morning will be all about priming and preparing you for the exam. This easy priming exercise will be a valuable tool for you for calming your mind. Then you will learn about the software and how it brings it all together. (This can only be an introduction, and additional studies are needed to master PHPP.)

First, we will be summarising everything we learned, and we will do more exercises. Following, we will have an introduction into designPH the 3D modelling plugin for SketchUp and see how early on we already can determine the performance of our designs. Finally, we talk about quality insurance, and you will learn how to certify projects. The strong foundations of Passive House are set now, and you are able to separate the weeds from the seeds.

Finally, we will have a guest that will be talking about their experience.

This is now the last training session before the exam, and we put some extra weights on. After this, the exam will be a breeze.

First, we will read the full exam, and then we do the priming. Now, you have 3 hours to show what you learned in these two weeks. The official part finishes before 2pm but you want to stick around. During these two amazing and intense weeks, you made new friends and you joined the Passive House family. Keep the evening and maybe even the night free for the celebration. You can be proud of yourself what and you have achieved; it deserves a party!
